As the world rapidly moves online, sectors from management, industry, government, and education have broadly begun to virtualize the way people interact and learn. Virtual Learning Environments: Concepts, Methodologies, Tools and Applications is a three-volume compendium of the latest research, case studies, theories, and methodologies within the field of virtual learning environments. As networks get faster, cheaper, safer, and more reliable, their applications grow at a rate that makes it difficult for the typical practitioner to keep abreast. With a wide range of subjects, spanning from authors across the globe and with applications at different levels of education and higher learning, this reference guide serves academics and practitioners alike, indexed and categorized easily for study and application.

The first objective of this study is to derive a multidimensional research framework simultaneously outlining and concretising particular aspects being relevant to and surrounding the elicitation and evaluation of VLE design characteristics. Based on this, the second objective of this study is to elicit for the first time a holistic set of well-defined, simultaneously detailed and operative VLE design characteristics systematically. In reply to a recently articulated call for research (Venkatesh & Bala, 2008), the third objective of this study is to evaluate for the first time the impact of the desired set of VLE design characteristics to be elicited on crucial behavioural determinants of users’ behavioural intention to use and actual use of a VLE in terms of the VLE success measures of this study. Such an investigation may reveal further, more detailed and operative, knowledge about design-related and behavioural drivers of users’ current VLE use/refusal.

This book covers the key current topic of electronic library resources and learning in the digital age. The book begins by outlining the changing ‘information environment’ in which librarians now work. It then goes on to discuss: the development of e-learning as a concept and the impact this is having on the further and higher education sector; the changing role of the librarian in supporting online learning; the technical problems associated with connecting up library systems; the copyright and licensing of electronic resources in a digital environment; and, finally the book offers tips for librarians when becoming involved in such initiatives. Digitalised learning with its promise of autonomy, enhanced learner choice, independence and freedom, is an intuitive and appealing construct but closer examination reveals it to be a rather simplistic proposition, raising the following questions. -What do we mean by autonomy? -What are we implying about the role of the teacher, the classroom, and interaction between learners? -What do we understand about the impact of technology on the ecology of the learning environment? This book describes the use of a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) by a group of advanced English language learners in Mexico, comparing what students thought and what they did in response to the technology. The theoretical aim of the book is to work towards the construction of a theory of the development of autonomy and virtual learning in an EFL context. Enhanced understanding about the relationship between autonomy and technology has the potential to inform academics, software designers, materials writers, teacher educators, and teachers and to help learners in their quest to acquire a foreign language.
