, Jean ANDRE Universite de Paris XI, ORSAY, France. Sperm cells have long been considered as the most highly specialized of all living cells. They surely are, being very diverse, very complex, containing organelles which do not exist in any other cell -such as acrosome or crystallized mitochondria- and being endowed with a very unique behaviour, that is to meet and recognize the ovum, pierce its protective envelopes and inject into its cytoplasm a most precious deposit, the haploid genome of the species. It is Baccio Baccetti's merit to have felt the need for a confrontation of the scientists working on sperm in order to clarify the apparent complexity of the enormous amount of knowledge accumulated on the subject. Thus, he successfully inaugurated the series of the InternationaZ Symposia on SpermatoZogy. The Seillac edition is the fourth in the series. After an initial stage during which morphology was predominant, our meetings have turned more and more towards function. It has been the will of the French Organizing Committee to devote this meeting mainly to Eutherians, and, among those, to man, in connection with the conflicting necessities to help the sterile couples and to contrul the population explosion at the surface of the world.

This revised and updated second edition provides a comprehensive account of the human male gamete. Detailed overviews of human sperm production, maturation, and function - and how these processes affect and influence fertility, infertility, and assisted reproduction - are given. A wide range of new developments including proteomics, spermatogenesis, sperm-specific WW domain-binding proteins, Ca2+ signalling, DNA packaging, epididymis are explored, whilst a new chapter presents information gained from mouse genetics, highlighting how it informs male fertility research. The impact of environmental factors during pre-pubertal and pubertal stages of life is also investigated. Featuring engaging prose with chapters organized topographically, The Sperm Cell remains an essential resource for andrologists, clinical scientists, and laboratory personnel.

Biology of Fertilization, Volume 2: Biology of the Sperm is the second in a three-volume series that brings together various lines of research about reproduction in general and fertilization in particular. It is devoted to spermatogenesis, sperm physiology, and the initial interactions of sperm with egg components. The book is organized into three parts. Part I on spermatogenesis and sperm physiology includes studies on the evolution of the sperm cell; regulatory mechanisms, sperm antigen differentiation, and maturation of sperm in the reproductive tracts in mammals; physicochemical mechanisms of the acrosome filament extrusion process; and enzymes associated with sperm cell function. Part II deals with chemotaxis in microorganisms: bacteria and slime molds. Part III on gamete recognition and binding includes studies on identifying, isolating, and characterizing specific sperm and egg surface components involved in sperm-egg interaction; fertilization in the alga Fucus; fertilization in insects; and the role of lysins in fertilization.

Originally published in 2006, this is a comprehensive and definitive account of the human male gamete. The volume summarizes many unique and revealing characteristics of the sperm cell. It provides a detailed overview of human sperm production, maturation and function, and looks at how these processes affect and influence fertility, infertility and ART. The volume thus provides a detailed review of the most important research and developments, augmented with pertinent references. This book will appeal to all practitioners and scientists in reproductive medicine and in particular to clinical scientists, graduate and post-graduate scientists, and laboratory personnel.

Throughout history, mankind has wondered about its origin - where he came from and how he got here. “Where did I come from?” is one of the first questions our own children ask us. But the real question should be ‘What are mankind’s building blocks’? For posterity’s sake, the answer is sperm! Rather than giving the female egg all the credit, as is usually the case, let’s shine the light on this silent, unsung hero – the sperm – shall we? So to the question ‘What came first, the chicken or the egg?’ we can unequivocally state Who Cares! Because without sperm, there would be no question to ask now, would there? Being the author and merely a man, I thought it more apropos to go to an actual source for the truth. So to that end, I found one who will walk and talk you through all you need to know about sperm, including things you never knew were possible along with those amazing things you might have heard but wondered if they were really true. And even though you are a human and will be getting your story from a human sperm, s/he will even throw in tidbits about some of your animal friends for comparison purposes. So, come and meet the little guy who will tell you all you need to know.
