This book offers a comprehensive review of recent advances in cancer immunotherapy, and explores the value and limitations of the most effective current therapeutic strategies and emerging treatment modalities. It discusses in detail the successes achieved using monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), including developments with regard to conjugated mAbs and also bispecific mAbs as novel treatment options for leukemia and solid tumors. It also examines the advances toward personalized immunotherapy, focusing on the effectiveness of adoptive cell therapy using genetically engineered T cells with tumor-associated antigen-specific T-cell receptors and chimeric antigen receptors, as well as the role of tailored vaccines based on the patient’s cancer mutanome. Further, it describes the impressive therapeutic results recently achieved with checkpoint inhibitors, and analyzes novel strategies to modulate the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. Written by leading international experts and providing up-to-date information on emerging strategies, such as oncolytic virus-based therapy, epigenetic therapy, and combination therapy, the book appeals to all those with an interest in immunotherapy as it comes of age.In tying together the diverse set of disciplines and methods involved in these pursuits, the text covers: Discovery and validation of drug targets Drug screening Animal models Preclinical testing Pharmacology issues Clinical concerns ...

Molecular Cancer Therapeutics covers state-of-the-art strategies to identify and develop cancer drug target molecules and lead inhibitors for clinical testing. It provides a thorough treatment of drug target discovery, validation, and development. The introductory chapters provide an overview of pathways to discovery and development of molecular cancer therapeutics. Subsequent chapters progress from initial stages of drug target discovery to drug discovery, development, and testing in preclinical and clinical models. Topics include drug lead screening, drug-to-lead development, proof-of-concept studies, medicinal chemistry issues, intellectual property concerns, and clinical development. This invaluable reference promotes understanding of steps involved in developing drug leads for industrial partnering and development. It provides an overview of the strategies for discovery and validation of drug target molecules, and discusses cell- and molecule-based drug screening strategies, as well as mouse models for cancer. Coverage also includes how to refine drug leads for suitability in clinical testing, the special issues of clinical testing of molecular-targeted drugs, and intellectual property concerns. This volume provides an up-to-date survey of current laboratory and, mainly, clinical research on the diagnostic and treatment options in primary breast cancer.

We often hear physicians, health care professionals, poli ticians, and patient advocates that "nothing has happened in the treatment of breast cancer," since patients with breast cancer, the most frequent neoplastic condition in women in industrialized countries, are continuing to suffer relapse and succumb to this dreadful disease! This negativistic attitude does not seem to be justified, but, why is the transmission of clinical trial results into general practice, and with it progress, such a slow process? After many decades of frustrating stagnation of long-term survival expectations, in all stages of early, oper/lble breast cancer treated only by surgery and locoregional radio therapy, adjuvant systemic therapy (chemo- as well as endocrine treatments) clearly showed to significantly benefit in terms of disease-free and overall survival. This evolution has been extensively expounded on by the Worldwide Oxford Overview and the Expert Consensus Panel at the fourth International Conference 'on Adjuvant Therapy of Primary Breast Cancer in St. Gallen (Early Breast Cancer Trialists' Collaborative Group 1992; Glick et al. 1992). What has happened since then? During the past 3-5 years, several new concepts and treatment strategies have emerged and have been studied in various major breast cancer groups and treatment centers worldwide. Some of these can already be considered to assist in the primary treatment of operable breast cancer today, while others are . still undergoing clini, cal trials for better definition of their practical usefulness. The Department of Defense does not plan to ask for additional funds for breast cancer research , nor does it plan to continue the breast cancer research currently underway beyond the execution of its current funding .

Functional Foods in Cancer Prevention and Therapy presents the wide range of functional foods associated with the prevention and treatment of cancer. In recent decades, researchers have made progress in our understanding of the association between functional food and cancer, especially as it relates to cancer treatment and prevention. Specifically, substantial evidence from epidemiological, clinical and laboratory studies show that various food components may alter cancer risk, the prognosis after cancer onset, and the quality of life after cancer treatment. The book documents the therapeutic roles of well-known functional foods and explains their role in cancer therapy. The book presents complex cancer patterns and evidence of the effective ways to control cancers with the use of functional foods. This book will serve as informative reference for researchers focused on the role of food in cancer prevention and physicians and clinicians involved in cancer treatment. Discusses the role of functional foods in cancer therapy Presents research-based evidence of the role of herbs and bioactive foods in cancer treatment and prevention Provides the most current, concise, scientific information regarding the efficacy of functional foods in preventing cancer and improving the quality of life Explores antioxidants, phytochemicals, nutraceuticals, herbal medicine and supplements in relation to cancer prevention and treatment Contains a clinical approach to the use of functional foods to prevent and treat cancer Emphasizes the role and mechanism of functional foods, including the characterization of active compounds on cancer prevention and treatmentOral Surg Oral Med Oral Pathol 30:188, 1995. 2. ...
